SAN LUIS VALLEY ARCHAEOLOGICAL NETWORK ACTIVITIES 2005
Saturday,
May 21 Dry Creek Petroglyphs. A variety
of petroglyphs, found on BLM land in the Dry Creek area to the
southwest of Monte Vista, will be the focus of our trip. After
arriving we will hike about 1 mile to several rock art sites and
one possible "prehistoric rock sculpture". Access is
on a rather rough dirt road so high clearance vehicles will be
needed. There will be the opportunity to carpool for those without
a high-clearance vehicle. We will meet at the Forest Service office
to the west of Monte Vista at 10:00AM. Please bring along a lunch
and hiking apparel. For more information please contact Vince
Spero at 719-873-5916 (home), 719-852-6242 (work), or by email
at vspero@peoplepc.com.
Saturday,
June 25 Old Spanish Trail Day. The La
Vereda del Norte Chapter of the Old Spanish Trail Association's
annual General Membership Meeting will be held on Saturday, June
25th. The day's plans include field trips before and after the noon
business meeting, which convenes at the Rio Grande County Museum
in Del Norte with a catered BBQ luncheon. The morning leg of the
field trip follows the West Fork of the Old Spanish Trail between
Antonito and Del Norte. Dirt roads located in proximity to the original
trail do not require 4-wheel-drive vehicles. Participants will meet
in the parking lot south of the CATS Restaurant near the train station
in Antonito at 8:30 AM. The group will stop at the trail markers
on US 160 before proceeding into Del Norte for lunch. Following
the noon business meeting and luncheon participants will head north
to examine the route of the West Fork between Del Norte and Saguache.
If time allows, the afternoon field trip progresses as far as the
juncture between the East and West forks of the trail along the
Saguache River, a few miles west of Saguache. Anyone interested
in the history of the San Luis Valley, and especially old trails,
is invited to join in either or both field trips and to attend the
catered luncheon. There is no cost for the luncheon for those who
RSVP to Max Lara (274-5769), Ken Frye (852-6233 or by e-mail at
kfrye@fs.fed.us), or Pat Richmond (658-2377).

July
15, 16, & 17 Pueblitos de Dinetah,
on near Aztec, New Mexico. This trip will be our "Out-of-Valley
Experience" for 2005! We will visit 17th and 18th century structures,
called "pueblitos" (Spanish for "small villages")
built by Navajo people who were then threatened by Spaniards, as
well as by other Indian tribes. In response to the threats the Navajo
built a network of pueblitos in highly defensible locations, most
with fortified walls. Others were built on high-points to serve
as warning outposts. Their architecture reflects a blend of cultures:
Spanish style room-corner fireplaces with hoods; Pueblo style walls
of stone and mud mortar; and ancestral Pueblo style access shafts
and towers. Navajo rock art sites are also found in the area. We
will have an experienced guide lead the tour through this fascinating
area. You can learn more about the Pueblitos de Dinetah at the following
website http://www.desertusa.com/search/search.html
(*search for pueblitos). We will leave from the town of South Fork
at 11:00AM on Friday, July 15 for Aztec, New Mexico. Lodging at
Aztec includes: the Enchantment Lodge 505-334-6143; the Step Back
Inn 505-334-1200; and the Aztec Motel 505-333-2677. There are more
lodging options in nearby Farmington or Durango. We will arrange
a meeting spot in Aztec. The trip will be limited to 25 people and
you can reserve your spot by calling Vince Spero at 719-852-6242
or by e-mail at vspero@peoplepc.com. Look for updated information
on the SLV Archaeological Network website http://www.slvarchnet.org
